Artist’s Statement

My recent paintings are largely abstract, their elements drawn from nature, and shapes that pay homage to mid-century modern design, architecture, typography, and other man-made expressions of beauty.  The paintings explore emotions — joy, reverence, nostalgia, and humor. There is play — love of rhythm, color, and the balance of accident-prone gestures with precise rendering. Common themes are a life’s journey, the spirit of trees, earth’s origin stories, and the mystery of being. I work in acrylic and mixed media exploring opposites in conversation: bold and subtle, energetic and precise, light and dark, bright and muted, textured and smooth. Opposites that embrace the mystery — the yin and yang of it all.

Biography

Carrie Andrews has an MFA in Art and Design from the University of Michigan. She is a lifelong student of art, architecture, design, mythologies and religions, psychology and philosophy. Thus, a rich and varied lexicon populates her tool box as she gathers, pours, scratches, scrapes, stencils, and juxtaposes ideas and images. Layers of abstractions build textured surfaces rich in meaning.
